Artist's Description

The Old Manse was built in 1770 by Ralph Waldo Emerson's grandfather, Rev. William Emerson. In November 1834, Ralph Waldo Emerson moved in and wrote his first draft of Nature, one of the many works written during the Concord Transcendentalist Movement. The house was also later lived in by famous American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The house became a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Today, it is operated as a nonprofit museum. The house sits a few hundred yards away from the Old North Bridge, where the Battle of Concord took place beginning the Revolutionary War.
